Women’s Health and Mutual Support

Today we met with the Marshallese Women’s organization, Ippen Dron Club, to discuss how to support them in these uncertain and stressful times.

With the kind support of Oregon Community Foundation, Living Island and Ippen Dron Club will be able to put on a number of virtual Covid-19 story-telling circles.

For more information about the Ippen Dron Club in Salem, OR, please contact Cecilia Labi.

Covid-19 Testing in Tualatin

Today we had the last Covid-19 test site targeted at Pacific Islanders in Washington County this year. The event was great, with 150+ community members test. We are blessed for being able to provide these test sites, with interpreters on-site and material in multiple Pacific Languages.

At the event, we had the chance once again to provide food and resources for the people who got tested. In the midst of Pandemic, Wildfires, and Economic Recession, these resources have never been more important, and we truly appreciate the organizations that have supported and helped our efforts.

We also had the chance to say thank you so much for all work you do, to all the volunteers by serving a warm islander meal and plenty of donuts and coffee!

Escaping the Wildfire Smoke

Like so many others, we’re affected by the Oregon Wildfires. We work in an area that forms a natural pocket for the smoke, so today, as the Air Index passes 500 and our office became part of the Evacuation Zone (Level 1), we have decided it’s too unhealthy to stay. We are packing up laptops, notes, supplies and are escaping to the Coast for some fresh air.

Despite this, we consider ourselves truly blessed to only having to deal with the smoke when so many have seen their homes destroyed.

Stay safe whenever and wherever you can, you are all in our prayers.

After95, Voices Rising, Mark Harmony, and Arkansas

Living Islands have always put an emphasis on preserving, revitalizing, and promoting Micronesian culture (That’s why we build an outrigger in Portland).

Right now we are honored to sponsor After95 in the next phase of their ‘Voices Rising’ project. Last Thursday, we sent the team to Arkansas to meet with the community and local Marshallese talents. They hit the ground running, meeting with Consul General Eldon Alik at the RMI consulate, followed by their first meeting with Mark Harmony. During their stay, they will be meeting up with the local Marshallese Communities and in particular local Marshallese Music and Poetry talents, to document their journey.

We here at Living Islands are incredibly proud to support this documentary and would encourage everyone to help support their efforts, so please head over to http://linp.org/vr and hit the donate button to support them.

Update: After95 Creative team got to document the first day of recording a new original song from Mark Harmony for their ‘Voices Rising’ project.
